2 injured in explosion at California courthouse

A witness said an individual walked into Santa Maria Superior Court and threw a backpack at security just before the explosion.

Authorities are investigating an explosion at Santa Maria Superior Court in California that caused injuries.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said a suspect, an adult male, was detained shortly after the explosion Wednesday morning.

A witness told Scripps News California's Central Coast that an individual walked into the courthouse and threw a backpack at security just before the explosion.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, there were two reports of non-life-threatening injuries.

City Hall was locked down as a precautionary measure and will be closed for the remainder of the day.

Gov. Gavin Newsom's Office said in a message posted to social media that the California Office of Emergency Services was monitoring the situation and multiple agencies were involved including the FBI.
