ELOY, AZ — Four people have been killed and four others are injured after a crash that closed the I-10 in both directions south of Eloy for several hours, according to the Department of Public Safety.
DPS says the crash appears to involve six vehicles including two semi-trucks and a motor-home.
Video from a viewer seen in the player above appears to also show a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office vehicle involved in the crash. MCSO says an inmate and officers were involved in the crash but were not seriously injured. They were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
DPS says they were called moments before the crash for a wreckless driver in the area. That driver then reportedly crossed over the median into oncoming traffic causing the deadly crash.
An investigation earlier this year looked into crossover crash incidents along the I-10 , just north of this incident. The investigation showed that dozens of miles between the Valley and Tucson on this highway do not have any crossover barriers and several of these type of crashes have been occurring without them. Viewer video appears to show that there is not a barrier where this crash occurred, but officials have not confirmed whether or not there is.
Around 8:30 p.m., ADOT announced that all lanes of traffic had been reopened, but that there were still significant delays.
