TUCSON, Ariz. - The Tucson Sugar Skulls hired Kristi Lopez to direct the Sugar Dolls dance team.
Lopez earned notoriety by leading Sahuarita's PAC Dance Team with Walden Grove High School to national recognition. The squad's performances based on "The Wizard of Oz," "Harry Potter" and "Avengers" have gone viral. The team also appeared on "America's Got Talent."
A school spokesperson says Lopez will continue her role at Walden Grove while working with the Sugar Skulls.
“Kristi’s resume as a dancer, choreographer and coach is unmatched in our community and we are ecstatic that she’s decided to join our organization,” said Sugar Skulls owner Cathy Guy, in a statement. “We are committed to giving fans the best experience when they come to our games and the Sugar Dolls are a big part of the show. Kristi will take our team to a much higher level at games and in the community.”
Lopez, who graduated from Sabino High School and the University of Arizona, started the dance program at Walden Grove and was named the school's Teacher of the Year in 2014. She said she is excited for the opportunity.
“I am extremely excited and humbled for the opportunity to coach and direct dance at the professional level,” Lopez said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of making the Sugar Dolls an integral part of the Sugar Skulls organization. I’m eager to work closely with the organization and the community of Tucson.”
The Sugar Skulls open the season March 19.
