Salpointe Football strapped on the chin strap for the first time this season, and the Lancers are loaded with talent to make another state title run.

The Lancers are coming off a loss to Scottsdale Saguaro in last year's state championship game. To prepare themselves for a deep playoff run, Salpoitne has scheduled its first four games against teams outside southern Arizona.

Running back Bijon Robinson returns along with athlete Mario Padillo. One player generating a lot of excitement is athlete Lathan Ransom, who has received scholarship offers from multiple Pac-12 teams. Head Coach Dennis Bene says this year's team has the potential to be as good as his 2013 state championship team.

"I know that's a big compliment from me to them, but that's what they've shown me so far," said Bene. "They have good attitude and character. They are good kids. Those are the things that were so strong in 2013. They were talented and played strong every night and that's what we're hoping for."

Salpointe opens its season August 24th at Dobson.
