IFL rule differences as Sugar Skulls prepare for opener

TUCSON, Ariz — The Sugar Skulls might be practicing outside but they will be playing inside, and their first IFL game is this Sunday at San Diego. And, there are numerous rule changes between indoor football and the outdoor game.

For one, there are only eight players on the field instead of eleven.

"You don't have enough room, obviously to fill gaps there, and it goes to the uniqueness of indoor football," said head coach Marcus Coleman, who was defensive coordinator of the Iowa Barnstormers last year.

You'll often see two receivers in motion prior to the snap, giving them a head start over the defensive backs. There is a running clock, except for at then end of the game. And, there is no punting.

"The field is too short," added Coleman.

Other rule changes include narrower goalposts. Also, the kickoff team gets one point if the receiving team can't return it out of the endzone.

"It goes to the uniqueness of indoor football."

The Sugar Skulls are an expansion team that will play its games at the Tucson Arena.
