Diego De La Hoya (18-0) defeated (16-7-1) Erik Ruiz by a unanimous decision in a junior featherweight boxing match Thursday night at Casino del Sol.
De La Hoya, from Mexicali, landed 219 punches, exactly one hundred more than Ruiz. He effectively mixed his punches and used his speed and footwork to control the fight. He never appeared hurt.
All three judges scored the ten round fight for De La Hoya. Two judges scored it 100-90, while another had it 99-91.
De La Hoya is a cousin of legendary boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya, who was on hand for the fight. The event, presented by Golden Boy Promotions, was televised by ESPN. In the undercard, middleweight prospect D'Mitrius Ballard remained undefeated by beating Adrian Luna by unanimous decision.
