TUCSON, Arizona — The Arizona Interscholastic Association executive board has voted to cancel the winter sports season due to the ongoing risks associated with COVID-19.

Winter sports was scheduled to begin on January 18th, but that will not happen following a recommendation from the AIA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

“Unfortunately, it is expected that the state will see a continued rise in Covid-19 hospitalizations for some time," said SMAC Committee Chair Dr. Wilson. As medical professionals, we cannot in good conscience recommend that students engage in a winter season under the current conditions.”

The Arizona Department of Health Services reported more than 11,000 new positive cases on Friday. The AIA did allow fall sports following a delay, but it was not completed for most schools.
