Kalei Mau a star on the court and on YouTube

Posted

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - "This girl came up to me in the supermarket.  I was with my dad and this little girl was shaking.  She brings out a napkin and a pencil and said, 'are you Kalei Mau?"

The young fan didn't want Kalei's signature because of her success on the volleyball court. And she has a lot of it.  The junior Wildcat currently leads the team with 433 kills on the season.

"And she said 'I'm you're biggest fan!"

The young girl was a fan of the Kalei Mau she watched sing reggae songs on YouTube.

Mau started singing since she was three years old when she would sing in the car.  In the 5th grade, Kalei's best friend convinced her to sing in the school's talent show.

"It was so embarrassing, but after that I was like wow, if only people could hear how I sing in the bathroom instead of on stage, I think they would like it."

So in 7th grade, Kalei's friend uploaded a video of her singing to Youtube.  Just as Kalei had thought, people loved it.

Her videos quickly drew thousands of views, adoring fans, and even celebrity attention.

"Colbie Caillat re-tweeted me on Twitter. Demi Lovato re-tweeted that. People were tweeting me saying "wow, I know a celebrity!" Kalei laughs.

Mau's most popular video is of her and a friend singing a song called "Kiss That I Never Had," which has reached almost 500,000 views on YouTube.  While Kalei is flattered by the adoring of her fans, the Hawaiian native sings for much more than online recognition.

"I'm so blessed to be able to share my gifts with everyone.  Tongans, Somoans, Hawaiians... this is just my culture, we love music, we speak through music,"

Mau hasn't uploaded a video to YouTube since her freshman year of high school due to the demands of being a Divison-1 student athlete.

"It's a lot of work. People are waiting for my videos and it's just not really my life, i have a lot to do," Mau admits,
