KGUN9 has launched a new initiative called "The Rebound Arizona." We're committing ourselves to stories about how to help Arizonans find jobs, how to save money in the day-to-day, supporting our local restaurants, holding officials accountable, and continuing to track how the local economy is doing.
If you are looking for a job right now, you will likely be forced to stand out from the crowd from other candidates through a computer screen during a virtual interview.
NOW HIRING: Companies hiring workers in Arizona
"It has changed dramatically," said Lisa Fleury, vice president of Talent Acquisition at Voya Financial, a retirement and financial company, on how they have had to change their hiring processes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "We are definitely a company that believes in bringing people in."
Like a lot of companies, Voya has had to transition to online interviews.
"We're trying to sell them on our company... our culture without actually having them see it," Fleury explained.
Businesses now have to find unique ways to showcase their organizations digitally. But, how does that change how you sell yourself to them?
Here are the do's and don'ts to remember when preparing for a virtual interview, according to Fleury.
"The top things are: be prepared ahead of time," she said. "Act like it's still going to be a face-to-face-interview."
That means you should getting fully dressed and put together. Clean your work area because your home is also now a reflection of you as an employee.
Fleury also suggests turning your cell phone off so it will not go off in the middle of your conversation and advised that you ask family members not to come in or out of the room. The same goes for pets.
Wherever you plan to have your computer, laptop, or phone for the interview, make sure the area is well lit. You want to be seen.
Also, keep a pen and paper nearby to be able to take notes during the interview. Fleury said interviewers do not expect you to remember everything.
"Make sure the interviewer has a chance to finish what they're saying," Fleury said. "Listen carefully and take a few seconds to respond."
Her last piece of advice is to smile. Fleury said it shows your personality, shows you are engaged in the conversation, and even forces you to talk clearer.
Voya Financial is based out of New York, but has offices in Chandler and Scottsdale. They are currently hiring for positions at both locations. You can visit https://corporate.voya.com/careers to see their current job openings.
