TUCSON, Ariz. — The Tucson Department of Transportation has added 'Mobility' to its name. It's all in an effort to develop safety measures that include everybody on the road, and not just drivers.
The change was motioned by Ward 1 Council Member Lane Santa Cruz at a recent Mayor and Council retreat.
She says she wants to see car lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks on every road in Tucson.
"It's time that we do better for our community," Santa Cruz said.
The name change is just the start of a plan to change the overall mission of the department, to create something called 'Move Tucson.'
Many of the previous priorities have been made to benefit drivers, but not pedestrians or bicyclists, according to Santa Cruz.
She says she wants to get the conversations started as to how to plan to make better investments to improve the safety of the entire community.
