ICE is reporting another death at the Eloy Migrant-Detention Center
A Guatemalan woman is the 15th detainee from the facility to die since 2003. It's yet another detainee death from what critics say is the deadliest immigration detention center in the country. It marks the third in-custody death nationwide for Immigration and Customs Enforcement since October.
Raquel Calderon Hidalgo, 36, died at a nearby hospital after suffering a series of seizures. She had been transferred to ICE custody last week, six days after the Border Patrol apprehended her. According to ICE, she was awaiting removal to her home country.
Hidalgo's death has re-ignited controversy and sparked the discussion among immigration activists who have been critical of the Eloy Detention Center over its conditions, which they say has caused too many deaths.
