A Phoenix woman is searching for answers after finding that her power bill was unusually high for her 600-square-foot apartment unit.
Ashley Oliveto says her power bill for July totaled more than $350, which is unusually steep for her apartment’s size.
“I’m panicking, something’s not right,” Oliveto said. “I called them (APS) immediately and told them this isn’t right.”
According to APS, power theft isn’t uncommon. In fact, they even have a person who is dedicated to catching these suspects.
“I’ve seen exposed wires near playgrounds. I’ve seen missing meters on streets,” said Paige Chatwood, senior revenue protection investigator for APS.
Here are some signs that you may be a victim of power theft:
- Abnormally high electric bill
- Extension cords outside of neighbor’s home that are out of place
- Exposed wires around your meter
