Safety tips for motorists, pedestrians on Halloween

While Halloween is all about fun and fear, it's also a holiday that sees a surge in pedestrians on the street.

Children are more than twice as likely to be hit and killed by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year, according to the National Safety Council.

This year, the National Safety Council is offering a few tips to keep trick-or-treaters safe while they're out on the road.

Safety tips for motorists:

  • Watch for children on medians and curbs 
  • Enter and exit driveways carefully
  • Watch for kids in dark-colored costumes
  • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween

While trick-or-treaters will be out in full force, distracted drivers and impaired drivers could be too. 

The Tucson Police Department and Pima County Sheriff's Department will be conducting DUI enforcement on Halloween to try to keep drunk drivers off the road.
