Several school districts have announced that its schools will remain closed Wednesday and some even longer due to the ongoing teacher strike.
Tucson Unified School District
Tucson Unified School District will remain closed to students on Wednesday, May 2. This decision was made based on reported teacher absences for that day.
Warren Elementary School will remain on total shutdown. This is because the state mandates that schools provide a certain number of instructional minutes, and after three days of closures, Warren no longer had enough instructional minutes to support continued walkout days.
Employees affected by a total shutdown will not be able to use leave balances for absences unless they are 12-month employees.
If the walkout continues, more schools may be in this situation with instructional minutes. The Governing Board will meet tonight to weigh issues related to the walkout.
Makeup instruction plans will be determined when we know how much time will need to be recovered.
For all schools except Warren Elementary, Food Services will continue to offer meals to students up to 18 years. Breakfast will be available from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meals are free for children.
Breakfast is $2 for adults, and lunch is $3. Parents/guardians should accompany children. Schools will not be able to provide supervision. Children are allowed on campus only during meals.
All preschool programs and before- and after-school programs will also be closed. Fees will be credited for days closed due to the walkout. The Brichta and Schumaker centers will be open and will operate normally.

Amphitheater School District
In our discussions with our association leadership this morning, it was clear that resolution of the statewide teacher walkout is dependent on the budget vote in the legislature. We anticipate that vote sometime tomorrow and the legislature intends to adjourn on Thursday.
Therefore, we are announcing that ALL schools will reopen on THURSDAY, MAY 3. However, schools will continue to be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, May 2.
We will need to make up the instructional time that has been missed during the closure. Please be assured that we are exploring all potential options to minimize the impact on the end of the year.
What we know right now is that we will need to extend our existing school days by a number of minutes each day, as well as cancel all scheduled early out days on Tuesdays.
We will be sending more detail to you on what this will mean once the calculations have been completed.
Thank you for your patience during this very challenging time. We appreciate your support and we can't wait to see your children back on Thursday.
