Mount Lemmon to remain closed during hard freeze

With chilly temperatures and snowfall on Mt. Lemmon on December 29, the question on everyone's minds is: Is Mt. Lemmon open to public yet?

Not quite. Per the Pima County Sheriff's Department, the Catalina Freeway is still closed.

Today, PCSD said that temperatures were at 25 degrees and dropping, and snow flurries were appearing in the region. These elements contribute to unsafe roadway travel, along with wet roadways.

At this time, only residents and employees are permitted up the mountain, with identification and proof of residency or employment. The department also wants these vehicles to have chains, four-wheel drive, or both, to be led up the mountian.

PCSD has notified that the control road on the back of the mountain, Oracle, is closed with locked gates until March. Other road closures include: Bear Wallow Road and Ridge Road.

PCSD is working on improving road conditions and will update news sources as soon as conditions change.

Snow was accessable in Sierra Vista, however, with up to an inch coming down on Saturday evening to create a landscape blanketed in white.
