UPDATE (11:12 a.m., Jan. 24):

The driver of a Toyota Sequoia was allegedly impaired when she crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Toyota Corolla on Tucson’s southeast side, Tuesday morning, according to a news release from Tucson Police Department.

The collision killed the Corolla’s driver, identified as 40-year-old Ashley Elaine McGee, and sent the Corolla’s passenger to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Sequoia, identified as a 27-year-old female, was also transported to St. Joseph’s with serious injuries.

The crash happened just after 8:45 a.m. on Old Vail Road, near Rita Ranch. TPD detectives determined the Sequoia was traveling eastbound when she drove across a center multi-use lane and straight into the westbound-traveling Corolla.

TPD’s DUI Unit determined the Sequoia driver was impaired at the scene, the news release said.

McGee had narcotics and paraphernalia on her person, but any drugs and alcohol in her system will be determined at a later date, the news release said.

The investigation is ongoing.
