PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix firefighters have recovered a woman's body from a fire in a condominium.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out Monday around 5:30 a.m. inside a condo near 28th Street and Greenway Road.

Amid heavy smoke and fire, arriving crews entered the home and found a 53-year-old woman.

Despite resuscitative efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A male occupant of the home reported that he awoke to the fire and tried to wake up the woman. When she didn't move, he went to get a fire extinguisher but couldn't re-enter the home because of the fire's intensity.

He was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation but is expected to be OK.

Six residents in nearby units displaced by the fire may be able to return later Monday.
