Takeaways from the conference:

  • UAPD Chief Chris Olson said the victim was shot on the sand volleyball courts next to the Arizona-Sonora residence hall. Friends and family members picked Jamshidi up and carried him to a vehicle on the south side of the Arizona-Sonora Hall with the idea of taking him to the hospital. Once at the vehicle they changed their minds and waited for first responders.
  • Chief Olson said there were several small fights that occurred before the shooting. The suspect was known as someone who regularly played volleyball at the courts, but no one knew his name.
  • Chief Olson said the first call identifying Romero-Encinas came in at 8 a.m. the next day. Several more calls identifying Romero-Encinas came in throughout the day. Detectives used the information to obtain residence and vehicle information. They applied for two search warrants and one arrest warrant. Those two search warrants were served on Tuesday, but Romero-Encinas was not at either location.
  • Wednesday, Romero-Encinas returned to his apartment to turn himself in. His roommates called 9-1-1 and Romero-Encinas was arrested, Chief Olson said.
