Warning for hikers: stay hydrated

The biggest mistake is not drinking water
Posted

Temperatures will creep above 110 degrees over the next few days. That means hiking conditions will be dangerous and could be deadly. However, that is not stopping hikers from hitting their favorite trails.

To prepare for the dangerous conditions and ensure everyone's safety, rangers and staff at Sabino Canyon  will be out to talk to hikers about staying safe and stressing the importance of hydrating.

According to experts, the biggest mistake is people forgetting to drink water well before they go on a hike. They say hydration does not mean starting to drink water once you are at the trail, but drinking water the night before, in the morning before you head to the trail and then having plenty of water with you on the hike and continuing that hydration once the hike is complete.

Dehydration can set in immediately, and it is important to know the symptoms.

They include:

  • lack of energy
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • increased thirst

Those who are heading outdoors should also take other precautions:

  • wear lighter clothing
  • wear a hat
  • apply sunscreen
  • know your limits
  • bring a cell phone
