TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Two people are dead and two others are in the hospital after a crash between a four-door sedan and a commercial truck Monday morning on Oracle Road, just north of Oro Valley.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety says it was notified around 6:15 a.m. of a two-vehicle crash on southbound State Route 77, also known as Oracle Road, at milepost 85 near Wilds Road. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to DPS.
AAA Landscape says one of the people killed was a member of its Tucson crew. In a statement posted to Facebook, the company says the crew was on its way to a job site when “a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction lost control and collided with our vehicle.” The company says two other employees were hurt and are hospitalized.
“There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel,” the statement reads. “Our employees are more than just members of our team; they are part of our AAA family, and a tragedy like this affects every one of us.”
The company says it will not release more details for now, out of respect for the employees and their families.
DPS has not said what caused the crash, identified the people who died or given an update on the condition of the two people who were hurt.
Troopers and the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner were still on scene late Monday morning. The sedan was split in half and damaged so badly that it was hard to tell what kind of car it was.
The southbound lanes of Oracle Road were closed for most of the day during the investigation and reopened around 2:30 p.m.
George Bidwell lives nearby. He says he started hearing emergency vehicles just after 6 a.m.
“Probably a little bit after 6 o’clock, and just sirens after sirens for good half hour,” Bidwell said. “Haven’t heard that many sirens up here for a long time.”
Bidwell says he has seen crashes on that stretch of Oracle Road before, “but you know, nothing this bad.”
“I could be on the way to work like these poor guys in the landscaping truck, you know,” he said. “And you know, I don’t think they saw it coming.”
The investigation is ongoing.
