TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson Unified kicked off Attendance Awareness month at Mansfeld Middle school Monday.
On hand today representatives from TUSD, Amphi, and, Sunnyside.
The Mayor's office says students who are chronically absent or miss more than 2 days of school a month in early grades are much less likely to read at grade level by third grade, and those students are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
TUSD Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo says "We need to do a better job of informing the public, our parents, our community members of just how powerful it is to have kids in school every single day. It's such a routine expectation that I think people sometimes lose the sense of urgency around the importance of it."
The district says learning the importance of showing up everyday is a life skill that carries into the work world.
