TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - It was a special night for four Tucson Police officers as the department's foundations honored them with the Unsung Heroes Award.
Debbi Rees, a member of TPD for 23 years, volunteers her time every week with Therapeutic Riding of Tucson. The organization helps those with special needs through equine-assisted activities. Rees' volunteers weekly as a side walker.
Officer Matthew Merz is a 16-year veteran with TPD. He has an impressive resume, but is best known for helping others. Merz started his own charity, Flags for the Fallen. The non-profit honors officers killed in the line of duty. He even built the Fallen Officer Tribute Truck which has been displayed at many fundraising events.
The next honoree who was unable to attend is Minnette Powell who is a part of the police department's finance section. Her volunteer work includes helping the city's employee advancement program.
Sgt. Paul Sheldon is a tenured member of TPD. He works with the Team Triumph of Arizona where he runs to help those with disabilities.
