A multi-vehicle crash involving two utility vehicles and a Ram 2500 series truck in Cochise County Wednesday night sent two people to Banner UMC in Tucson.
According to a post from the Facebook page of Cochise County Sheriff Mark J. Dannels, Tombstone Marshal's Office, Tombstone Fire Department and Health Care Innovations were dispatched to an injury collision on Camino San Rafael near Kino Place in Tombstone.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office was brought in to assist, the post said.
Upon arrival, law enforcement saw the two utility vehicles blocking Camino San Rafael, just north of Kino Place. The Ram 2500 was also blocking the road.
Multiple ambulances and helicopters were requested at the scene.
Two patients were found, one on Camino San Rafael and one in the brush to the south, the post said.
An investigation revealed that the UTVs were heading north on Camino San Rafael, north of Kino Place, toward Walnut Gulch Bride, when the trailing UTV slammed into the lead UTV after the lead UTV slowed down, the post said.
The trailing UTV vaulted over the lead UTV and went airborne, while the lead UTV lost control and careened into a guardrail, the post said.
The airborne UTV then slammed into the Ram 2500, which was heading south on Camino San Rafael, causing heavy structural damage and "cabin intrusion," the news release said. The airborne UTV was then thrown from the Ram 2500 following impact and fell onto Camino San Rafael on its side, the post said.
The driver of the Ram suffered minor injuries, and did not require medical transport.
The UTVs were removed by a tow truck and will be stored in an evidence impound lot, the post said.
