TUCSON, Ariz. — The Tucson Sugar Skulls inaugural season kicked off last week with a win at San Diego, but on Sunday the fun came back to southern Arizona for the teams home opener.

Before the players ran out on to the turf thousands of fans came together to show off their Tucson pride at the teams kick off tailgate party.

One fan even told us once the season was announced she thought of the perfect present for her husband.

"I went and bought season tickets for our anniversary," said Sandra Reid.

The city's first football franchise is creating buzz for many especially with the Sugar Skulls mascot reflecting the culture and history of Tucson.

With seven homes games this season fans say they will continue to come out and cheer on their new favorite team, all while the city benefits economically.

"Hopefully it'll be great for businesses," said Mary Wenek. She adds, "I hope it will encourage the local businesses to stay open on Sundays because typically they close, I think they could really garner the business that comes down here on game day.

If you weren’t able to come out to the teams home opener your next chance will be March 31 when the Sugar Skulls take on San Diego. You can also catch Pat Paris and Jason Barr on 'Behind the Tucson Sugar Skulls' on our KGUN Facebook page.
