ORACLE, Ariz. - Concern about slick roads may have closed Catalina Highway to Mount Lemmon New Year’s Day but there were other places to play in the snow.
The snow brought a peaceful, postcard quality to the mountains around the town of Oracle.
But fights broke out on the road to Oracle---snowball fights.
There are places where people get their fill of snow in a hurry. But here it's a novelty people rush to enjoy before it melts away.
People who've lived around Southern Arizona for awhile know when we do have snow, you'll probably find a little more in the town of Oracle, because the altitude's higher there.
Walter Wesch told us: “Wwe're desert rats but to come out and play in the snow like this is neat. We drove up from the southwest side. We had a little snow this morning but not enough to stay very long. I knew if we came up here we'd find some good snow for the grandkids to play in."
Snowmen have been growing here but not growing very tall. The amount of snow leaves them a little height impaired.
At the Oracle Fire Department we pushed a tape measure into the snow built up on the antique fire truck parked out front. It showed about four and a half inches.
