SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Sierra Vista police are investigating a deadly drive-by shooting.

The incident happened on Sept. 28, at about 4:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Fry Boulevard.

A black pickup truck and a red Honda coupe were driving east on Fry Boulevard near Pizza Hut Bistro when the driver of the Honda started shooting at the pickup truck. The truck veered off the road and stopped in a wash east of the restaurant.

The driver of the truck, 18-year-old Jorge Portillo, was shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the hospital.

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, 20-year-old Rick Martin, who was a person of interest in the case, surrendered himself to police around 3 p.m. He was taken into custody and charged with one count of first-degree murder, eight counts of aggravated assault, seven counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of endangerment, and two counts of misconduct with a weapon.

“This was a dynamic case that moved quickly thanks to witnesses who remained on scene to provide valuable information,” Sierra Vista Police Chief Adam Thrasher says. “We want to thank everyone who helped bring this case to a rapid resolution.”
