School supply drive aims to help hospitalized students in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. — With school in full swing, a school supply drive is underway to make sure children in the hospital don't get behind in school.

Hughes Federal Credit Union is teaming up with Banner Children's for the drive. Last year, the hospital helped more than 400 student patients.

The supplies help sick students -- or those with learning challenges -- keep up with their studies and continue school as normal.

"Normalcy is very important," Tracy Denny, a school teacher at the hospital, said. "There are families -- and the patients are very challenged in a lot of ways. Their world is pretty much rocked. And so by continuing with their schooling and what they know, something that is familiar with them, helps them feel like they're still a part of something."

School supplies can be dropped off at any Hughes Federal Credit Union through the end of September.
