TUCSON, Ariz. - You may have started this Friday with a sweet treat, whether or not you knew it was National Donut Day.

A historical fact behind the national holiday is from the year 1917 the Salvation Army served donuts to soldiers on the front lines in World War I.

Since then it's been a tradition to enjoy a sweet snack on the first Friday in June.

The Salvation Army says their donut girls are credited with popularizing the food by handing out donuts when troops returned home from overseas.
