Prop 206 passed overwhelmingly, 59% to 41%. That means the minimum wage in the state of Arizona will go up from $8.05 an hour to $12 an hour by 2020.
More than a million Arizonans voted to approve the minimum wage increase, which means hundreds of thousands of employees earning minimum wage, will be making $10 an hour as of January 1st.
It also sees minimum go up incrementally to $12 by 2020. Starting in 2021, the measure would increase it with the cost of living.
The measure does retain Arizona's law regarding tipping. Employees who receive tip income can continue to earn $3 an hour less than the minimum wage.
It also requires employers to provide paid sick time:
- 40 hours a year to workers of businesses with 15 or more employees
- 24 hours to those of businesses with less than 15 employees
According to an analysis, the increase to $12 an hour would impact 800,000 workers in Arizona.
