TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Tucson police say a man was found shot to death near Midvale and Oak Tree Wednesday.

According to TPD, just after 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot at 1755 W. Valencia Road.

Upon arrival, officers found the man with signs of gunshot trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

TPD identified him Thursday as 32-year-old Juan Carlos Velderrain.

After interviewing witnesses, including a bystander who was in a confrontation with Velderrain, police learned that Velderrain was physically assaulting his girlfriend in the parking lot.

"During the assault, the girlfriend was able to get away from Velderrain and approached a bystander – asking him for help. The girlfriend got into the bystander’s vehicle as Velderrain verbally confronted them. During that confrontation, the bystander produced a firearm at which time Velderrain was shot," TPD said.

The woman suffered injuries from the assault and no others were injured.

TPD says the bystander remained on the scene and was interviewed.

This investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
