TUCSON, Ariz. — Pima County Supervisors are expected to ask for additional funding for their work processing asylum seekers at the Casa Alitas facility in Tucson.
Data from U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement shows Pima County processed about 20,000 asylum seekers last year. In 2020, the county expects they'll process another 12,000 at the Casa Alitas shelter alone.
In December, the federal government did not approve $200,000 of the Operation Stonegarden money to be used for humanitarian aid.

Now, the county will apply for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.
In a memo from December 20, County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry wrote that he expects the request to be around $1,000,000.
He also wrote the county will continue to support the Casa Alitas shelter and Catholic Community Services who operate it.
