The Tucson Police Department responded to a deadly shooting near 5th and Craycroft Monday night.

The shooting happened at a basketball court near Christ Church United Methodist, 655 N Craycroft.

TPD said Vashaun Baker, 29 was shot. He was transported to Banner University Medical Center but died shortly after.

Detectives with the Tucson Police Homicide Unit processed the area and spoke to witnesses.

Detectives found that Baker was playing basketball with several others when he got into a physical fight with one of the players. Immediately after the fight, the other player involved called his father, Paul John Alvarez, 38.

Alvarez drove to the basketball court alone and asked the players if they knew who had been fighting with his son.

Baker was still there and told Alvarez that he was the one involved. Alvarez then pulled out a handgun and shot Baker multiple times. Alvarez left the scene in his car before police arrived.

On Tuesday, just hours after the shooting, Alvarez turned himself into police. He was booked into the Pima County Jail on one count of First Degree Murder and two counts of Endangerment.
