TUCSON, Ariz. — The last day of school for Thornydale Elementary in Marana is hitting families especially hard this year -- the school is now closed for good.

On the sign out front Thursday was a thank you to families for the 45 years of support.

The Marana Unified School District voted last year to close the campus due to low enrollment. Parents and students at the school Thursday say they were sad to say goodbye.

"It's pretty sad for the kids," Thornydale parent Shock Carlos said. "My daughter has been going here since kindergarten. Very emotional, sad to see it go. Good school."

Aleeyah, a student at the school, was at a loss for words.

"I don't understand why they have to close it down," she said. "It's pretty sad."

Most students will transfer to either Quail Run or Butterfield.
