TUCSON, Ariz. - Changes officially go into effect at Sentinel Peak Park on Monday, November 11.

Starting November 11, vehicles will no longer be allowed to drive up the popular destination on Mondays.

Vehicle use will only be allowed Tuesday through Sunday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The park itself will be open from sunrise to eight p.m.

City of Tucson officials said the new rules give cyclists and hikers a day during the week where they don't have to worry about vehicles.

The changes come after more than a year since a cyclist was hit and killed on the mountain.

73-year-old Richard Ellwanger was on a morning ride back in October of 2018 when he was hit by a driver, according to Tucson Police.

Police said 20-year-old Yanibra Moreno was intoxicated and driving the wrong way down the mountain when she struck Ellwanger.

Since then community members urged city officials for more restrictions at the popular site.

The changes are a part of a six month pilot program. At the end of the six months, officials will determine whether the changes have improved access on the mountain.
