TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A new disc golf course opened Saturday at Quail Canyon Golf Course, making it the only disc golf course in town permanently placed on a regular golf course.
"It's the fastest growing sport that nobody knows about," said Mike Wierda, disc golf pro at Quail Canyon.
Wierda oversees disc golf at the new course. This makes four disc golf courses in Tucson, this is the only one with a fee because it is on a regular golf course. Wierda says there shouldn't be any issues with disc golfers running into regular golfers.
"We laid out the course where our hole one is there hole one. we don't have to criss-cross with people. Disc golfers play by the same etiquette rules as ball golf. If we're playing and a ball golfer catches up to us we're going to let them through," he said.
Saturday was opening day for disc golfers there, beginning with the 21st Annual Ice Bowl. The tournament is a charity event benefiting the Southern Arizona Food Bank.
Wierda says the course is so new, the baskets (the equivalent to a hole in a regular golf course) were set up on Wednesday.
Jeremy Herr is Vice President of the Tucson Disc Golf Club, he says this is now the best disc golf course in town.
"Marana [Rock] Disc Golf Course was the best but it had a huge flooding issue," said Herr.
The course in Marana was built on an old gravel pit, but filled with water in 2014 during the Monsoon.
