TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The attorney for former Tucson Firefighter David Watson worked hard to undermine the testimony of the key witness against him, the ex-wife who gave Watson an alibi, then took it away years later.
Watson is accused of killing his first ex-wife in 2000.
Three years later in 2003, he is also accused of gunning down his ex-mother in law and her friend while they sat on the front porch of their home.
Cross-examination began for Rosemary Watson, the woman he married after divorcing his now slain ex-wife.
Rosemary is also the woman who recanted her alibi in 2007.
The cross-examination went back to the night Linda Watson disappeared and when Rosemary told detectives her husband wasn't in the house.
During the examination, defense attorney Mike Storie attempted to get an idea of the relationship Rosemary had with David Watson.
When it began, ended and when it got bumpy.
"He moves out in September 2006 and starts dating someone in October of 2006," said Storie.
That is an important part of the examination since in 2007, Rosemary Watson recanted her story to detectives.
"So between the period of 2000 and 2007, your story remained that Dave was home both times that these incidents occurred. When in 2007 it changes. Dave is arrested in 2015. Correct?" said Storie.
The story changed after Rosemary Watson told detectives that at some time between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. the night Linda Watson went missing, she woke up and David Watson wasn't there.
Storie: "So back sometime after 5 a.m. is the second time you wake up."
Rosemary: "I can't tell you an exact time."
Storie: "Well I understand, but per what you're telling the detectives at some point all we know after 5 it could have been earlier. somewhere between 2 a..m. and 5 a.m. All we know is it's sometime after 5 and then you see David at the Jeep."
The defense brought up the double murder of Marilyn Cox and her friend Renee Farnsworth that were gunned down while sitting on the front porch.
"I don't believe I said Dave told me where the bodies were found. No, where they were shot. We found out through media and the Cornell Camp was friend with Marilyn and Linda," said Rosemary.
