Tucson police arrested a 28-year-old mother for attempted 2nd-degree murder and child abuse.

The arrest occurred Friday night on the 1700 block of East Benson Highway.

According to Sgt. Kimberly Bay with the Tucson Police Department, Leina Beckner attempted to drown her baby in a bathtub filled with water. She then removed the child from the water and placed them on the bed.

After seeing that the baby was struggling to move and breathe, Beckner called the police to report the incident.

TPD reported that the father of the baby ended the relationship with Beckner during the same day. She told authorities that she had planned to kill her baby and then herself.

The baby is currently in stable condition at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Beckner was taken into the Pima County Jail.
