Authorities say more than 40 pipe bombs, along with material to make dozens more, have been found in a Mesa man's home.
Charging documents say 51-year-old Jeffrey Dennis Metcalf faces 40 counts of manufacturing, selling and possessing prohibited weapons.
A judge ordered Metcalf released on $50,000 bond Thursday.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a multi-agency task force learned Metcalf was in possession of explosives.
Troopers stopped his vehicle Wednesday and discovered bomb-making materials inside. They say Metcalf admitted to having pipe bombs at his home.
A search warrant later found 42 pipe bombs with shrapnel.
Officers evacuated nearby homes before safely removing all the devices.
Metcalf will have a preliminary hearing Sept. 10.
A public defender has not yet been appointed to his case.
