TUCSON, Ariz. — A parade of sea creatures will take over 4th Avenue and Downtown Tucson Saturday night.

The annual Return of the Mermaids event is a Monsoon celebration made up of under-the-sea proportions.

When the summer storms arrive, the Mermaids rise for one night only on August 10, 2019.

"The mythology of Return of the Mermaids is that the Monsoon season comes and all the rain soaks the earth. It gets into those cracky mudcake areas and soaks down and then if it rains enough you awaken the mermaids sleeping below in the depths of Tucson and they emerge for one day at Return of the Mermaids," said event Coordinator Lizzie Mead.

If you've never attended Return of the Mermaids, Mead encourages complete participation including dressing up.

Throughout the night, merfolk can join a costume contest, dance to live music, participate in a treasure hunt and meet merfolk royalty.

The day begins at 2:00 p.m. and goes all night, ending with a dance party at Irene's Holy Donuts.
