Mexican authorities are conducting an investigation into the death of Nicholas Quets, a Tucson-area resident, who died in Mexico, the State Department has confirmed.
Quets graduated from Empire High School in 2011, a Vail Unified spokesperson confirmed. He also served in the Marines.
The family confirmed he was on the route from Nogales to Rocky Point.
Quets' brother-in-law Phil Sweet told KGUN 9 that Quets was shot while in Mexico, and brought up possible cartel involvement.
Sweet said, aside from Rep. Juan Ciscomani and Sen. JD Vance, who spoke about Quets at a stop in Tucson Tuesday, the family has yet to hear from any US elected official.
"We are an apolitical family," Sweet said. "We just want to make sure this is addressed appropriately and want who did this to be extradited and prosecuted, and my brother-in-law to get the justice he deserves.
