Mesa officials have signed off on an agreement to bring an Arizona State University satellite campus to the Phoenix suburb.
The Arizona Republic reports the city council voted 5-2 Monday in favor of a 99-year lease agreement with the university.
According to city documents, the city has agreed to construct the university's building on city-owned land downtown for about $63.5 million.
Mesa Mayor John Giles says the deal is an "opportunity to develop high-wage jobs and to give a shot in the arm to our economy."
Critics of the projects say the agreement was brought forward against the will of voters.
