TUCSON, Ariz. - Captain Mark Kelly launched his campaign for U.S. Senate in Tucson on Saturday.
The Navy veteran and retired NASA astronaut is running to replace Sen. Martha McSally in the special 2020 election. Kelly is the first democratic candidate to announce a bid to complete the late Senator John McCain's term, which ends in January 2023.
Here’s the crowd at Hotel a Congress for @ShuttleCDRKelly’s 2020 Senate campaign launch. Some attendees tell me they’re here because they like Capt. Kelly’s science background and stance on gun control @kgun9 #AZSEN pic.twitter.com/AYqjSfzOOB

At the launch event, Kelly mentioned using science and data to tackle problems such as climate change, affordable healthcare, gun control, and immigration reform.
Kelly will be in Phoenix on Sunday at the Van Buren.
There will be a capacity limit and those going to Phoenix will need to RSVP.
The Republican National Committee provided the following statement on Mark Kelly's campaign:
“Democrats are promoting a harmful agenda that will undo the progress of the past two years, and Mark Kelly is already sitting on the sidelines. Since announcing his campaign, Kelly has been more interested in ‘resistance’ than securing our border, proving he’s just another obstructionist Democrat. Arizonans deserve a leader who will take clear stances on issues important to them from day one and fight for their interests – not just another political bystander.”
