A Tucson man will serve 20 years in prison after he was convicted of seriously injuring his then-girlfriend's 2-year-old son.
Peter John Schmditfranz was sentenced Monday. In July, a jury convicted him of child abuse of a person under 15 years with death or serious physical injury likely.
He received credit for 931 days served.
Schmidtfranz had been dating the woman for three weeks when he injured the child in November 2015.
After he was left alone in a room with the boy, the mother found his son lying on his side, unresponsive.
The boy suffered a life-threatening subdural hematoma and retinal hemorrhages with schesis due to head trauma. He is expected to function at 60 percent.
