TUCSON, Ariz. - Chicano filmmaker and playwright, Luis Valdez will be the keynote speaker at a conference on ethnic studies on Friday, Apr. 26.
The Maya-Maíz Roots of Raza Studies conference will be held at 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Amethyst room at Pima Community College downtown campus at 1255 North Stone Avenue.
Mr. Valdez is recognized for his play "Zoot Suit" and his film "La Bamba." He considered as the father of Chicano theater.
There will be panels, storytelling, performances, and art presenting diverse, indigenous perspectives from Mexico and the United States.
The featured speaker include Maya educators from the Yucatán, and individuals who will share common strengths, connections and struggles across borders.
The event is free and open to the public.
