Let there be skiing

The latest winter storms have dropped enough snow on Mount Lemmon for Ski Valley to open.

The storm brought 80 miles per hour sustained winds and knocked down more than 50 trees.

The storm also severely damaged the upper lift.

But don't worry, the lower lift is open for business, and many Tucsonans started their ski season.

"I am excited that it opened today. I'm having a lot of fun out here. Got here at 9 o'clock when it opened," said skier Phillip Manus.

"I love the outdoors, and I love Mount Lemmon, so I think it's the perfect mix to come up here when it snows and try different activities."

This year the Mount Lemmon Ski School will not have one of its founding members, Brian Ashby, who recently died.

Ashby was the director of the ski school since 1976.

Ski Valley dedicated the ski school to Ashby.

As for the status of the main lift, the Ski Valley Management crew is still working to get it open.
