Lawyers say a father charged in his 9-year-old son's shooting death took his own life on Father's Day.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery announced Kansas Lavarnia's June 17 death Tuesday.

His wife's attorney, Jamie Jackson, also confirmed the death to the Arizona Republic.

The 32-year-old was charged with child abuse in the March 2017 shooting death of his son, Landen.

His wife, Wendy Lavarnia, is facing a felony murder charge in the boy's death. She told police her 2-year-old son accidently shot his older brother.

Prosecutors say she committed child abuse by leaving a loaded handgun within the reach of a child and later withheld medical treatment that could have saved her son's life.

Kansas Lavarnia told the Arizona Republic that the shooting was an accident and "there was no delay in calling 911."
