TUCSON, Ariz. - A jockey died after he was injured while racing at Rillito Park Racetrack over the weekend.
According to Cass Dewey of the Rillito Park Foundation, Richard Gamez died after he was injured in a crash during the race.
Gamez was leading in the fifth race at Rillito Park Racetrack Sunday when his horse stumbled and he was thrown from the saddle. The Rillito Park Foundation reported Gamez was trampled by at least one trailing horse and taken to Banner University Medical Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Foundation President Jaye Wells says the horse he was riding was not injured. The racetrack and foundation are planning a celebration of Gamez’s life this weekend. He was 66. Details of the celebration have not yet been released.
