Inmates attack guards in Pinal County jail

Two Pinal County Jail guards were injured after inmates attacked them Sept. 7.

According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, one guard suffered multiple stab wounds in his torso. He is hospitalized and expected to recover. The other guard, who was assaulted while he tried to fend off the stabber, suffered a minor hand wound.

Alleged gang members Robert Villalobos, 29; Mauricio Maraga, 25 and Santiago Sanchez, 26, are accused of assaulting the guards with improvised weapons known as "shanks."

Villalobis was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery and weapons violations. Moraga was convicted of manslaughter and Sanchez was convicted of a weapons violation.

Charges are expected to be filed after the investigation concludes.
