New hot car law in effect and other Arizona laws taking effect today

A new law allows bystanders to break windows to rescue children and pets from hot cars under certain circumstances.

If you see a child or pet trapped inside a hot car, you must contact authorities before breaking the window.

You are not allowed to damage any other part of the vehicle, and must stay with the child or pet until authorities arrive.

Other new laws in effect Wednesday include one in which uncertified teachers can be hired if they meet certain requirements. Teacher candidates do not have to take any test to measure proficiency. All they must demonstrate is expertise in a content area or subject matter, and local school superintendents have final hiring approval on new teachers.

Another new law taking effect today will allow podiatrists to amputate a patient's toe (not an entire foot). This is an effort to help unburden emergency rooms and hospitals.

Also, students can now put on sunscreen at school without a prescription.
