A new hands-free driving ordinance will go into effect Friday in Oro Valley.

The ordinance will prohibit drivers from holding their phone while driving.

Even when a driver is stopped at a light or stop sign they are not allowed to pick up their phone.

Oro Valley Police says the only time drivers can use their phone is if they pull over to the side of the road and stop or during an emergency.

"Anytime we are looking for a type of distracted driving like this we are looking at driving behavior first," said Oro Valley Police's Lt. Curtiss Hicks. "We are looking for those people that are drifting out of those lanes, you know they are driving slow with traffic in a unique way for example going 15 or 20 miles under the speed limit."

To prevent distracted driving Hicks advises drivers get Bluetooth, a phone mount or use a phone's speaker.

For the first few months, officers will pull drivers over and give them a warning for using their phone.

But after, any driver caught with a phone in their hand, could face a $50 fine for the first violation, $100 for the second violation, $200 for the third violation and $250 fine for being involved in a car crash while using their phone.
